Ethical Policy of Institute of Health Sciences

Institute of Health Sciences, Bhubaneswar expects the highest ethical standards from their faculty, and students when conducting research, submitting papers for publication.

Redundant or Duplicate Publication

Duplicate or redundant publication is a publication that overlaps substantially with one already published, in press, or in an electronic media submission. Duplicate or redundant submission is the same manuscript (or the same data) that is submitted to different journals at the same time. This violates international copyright laws, ethical conduct, and cost effective use of resources. Submitted manuscripts should not have been published or currently submitted elsewhere. Duplicate publication is a violation of the code of research ethics.

Conflicts of Interest

At the point of submission of manuscript for publication, research ethics dictate that each author reveals any financial interests or connections, direct or indirect, or other situations that might raise the question of bias in the work reported or the conclusions, implications, or opinions stated - including pertinent commercial or other sources of funding for the individual author(s) or for the associated department(s) or organization(s), personal relationships, or direct academic competition.

Permissions to Reproduce Previously Published Material

Permission is required to reproduce material (such as illustrations) from the copyright holder. Articles cannot be published without these permissions.

Patient Consent Forms

The protection of a patient's right to privacy is essential. Please collect and keep copies of patients’ consent forms on which patients or other subjects of your experiments clearly grant permission for the publication of photographs or other material that might identify them. If the consent form for your research did not specifically include this, please obtain it or remove the identifying material.

Ethics Committee Approval

All articles dealing with original human or animal data must include a statement on ethics approval at the beginning of the Methods section. This paragraph must contain the following information: the name and address of the ethics committee responsible; the protocol number that was attributed by this ethics committee; and the date of approval by the ethics committee.

Research should be the original work of the author(s). The purpose of this set of guidelines is to provide a positively oriented set of practical suggestions for maintaining integrity in research. Not only does the ethical conduct of science satisfy a scientific moral code, it also leads to better scientific results. Because, the adherence to ethical research practice leads to more attention to the details of scientific research including qualitative analysis, quantitative & statistical techniques and to more thoughtful collaboration among investigators. Observance of these guidelines will help an investigator avoid departures from accepted ethical research practice and prevent those most serious deviations that constitute research misconduct. Research misconduct is defined as fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism including misrepresentation of credentials in proposing, performing, or reviewing research or in reporting research results.

These guidelines can be used as a common repository of generally accepted practice for experienced researchers and as an orientation to those beginning research careers. These principles apply to fields of scientific research, social and behavioral sciences that involve collection and interpretation of data. When in doubt about the accepted ethical standards in a particular case, a researcher should discuss the matter on a confidential basis with another respected colleague, Institutional Ethics Committee or the Director/Principal of Institute. As Students are members of the Institute campus, they have a substantial interest in the governance of the Institute. The Code, policies and the varied procedures laid down herein intends that the principle of student involvement in governance in both administrative and academic areas is essential and it is pivotal that Students must be, at all junctures, be encouraged to put forth their views and advice, for an informed decision making. Student Participation is encouraged and must be strengthened through the involvement of students in all levels. Therefore, all students who are a part of the Institute and who are going to be enrolled in the Institute are advised to uphold the policy and inform the Institute of any violations and assist individually and collectively to improve the quality and effectiveness of this Code and appended policies.
